Key Takeaways

🔷 Before launching your podcast, start with your why and clearly define your ideal listener—understanding who you’re serving shapes every decision from content topics to marketing strategy and audience growth strategy approaches.

🔷 Treat your podcast launch like introducing a new product line to market, complete with a comprehensive go-to-market plan, dedicated marketing budget, and integrated marketing across newsletter integration, social media integration, and podcast ads.

🔷 Define your own benchmark for podcast success rather than comparing yourself to others—whether that’s downloads, business growth, engagement rates, or lead generation, your metrics should align with your unique goals and content strategy.

Your Top Four Podcast Growth Questions Answered

Traci DeForge: [00:00:00] Business owners, this one’s for you. What is the biggest mistake that business owners make when it comes to the launch of their podcast?

Voice Over: This is the Growth Accelerator Podcast. Now your host, Tracy Deforge.

Traci DeForge: Welcome back to the Growth Accelerator Podcast. Today’s the day if you want your most frequently asked questions answered, because our team has pulled together the four most frequently asked questions that we get about launches, growth, and all the things podcasting.

Stay tuned. We’re gonna dive in. Most often when I am being interviewed on podcasts or at industry conferences, this is one of the first questions I always get, which is what is the most important first step for launching a podcast? So when we go into pre-launch strategy sessions, the first question that I want to connect with with the host is what is your why for doing this podcast?[00:01:00]

It seems like it’s such a simple question, but it’s really a lot more complex than people give it credit for. It’s, it’s often ironic because I will tell people, “Okay, we’re here for your first discovery session. We are not gonna talk about the content today. We are not gonna talk about how you’re gonna open the show.

We are not gonna talk about how you’re gonna close the show or what is gonna be in your cover art. We’re gonna get to that, but this first session is gonna be all about why are you doing the podcast and who is gonna be on the other side of that content that you put out that’s gonna consume that content.”

Because you want to be able to align those two objectives so that people are talking to each other and seeing and showing up for the content.

Voice Over: Mm-hmm.

Traci DeForge: And we’ll do fun things. Like, we’ll have, um, we’ll do visual experiences. Like, you’re on the stage and you’re peeking out into the audience. You know, who are those people that are milling in?

Who are the people who got out of [00:02:00] their home, into their car, drove to the venue, sat in the seats? And, and it’s great because we really want the host to visualize who they’re talking to. Mm-hmm. Because p- podcasting can be such a isolating experience to a degree, especially if the majority of your interviews are done remotely.

You really need that capacity to picture who you’re talking to. Mm-hmm. But also an important thing to note about that is, is that people get all tied up in downloads and metrics, but if you can picture, like, what does it feel like if there’s a room of 100 people? What does it feel like if there’s a room of 1,000 people?

I mean, of course, everyone’s, everyone wants to picture themselves in the room of 50,000, 100,000 people, and that’s amazing, and you can get there. But what kind of impact can you have if you are getting your message out and you’re building your brand, or you’re having a conversation that changes someone else’s [00:03:00] life?

And there are 100 people in that scenario. Like, that’s impact.

Voice Over: Frequently asked

Traci DeForge: question number two. Business owners, this one’s for you. What is the biggest mistake that business owners make when it comes to the launch of their podcast? Think through the foundation of your content before you even launch your first episode.

That may seem overwhelming, but honestly, it’s building a strategy just like you would in your business if you were launching a strategy for a new product line or a new course or a new program, or if you were educating your audience about a new service that you were providing. You wanna make sure that you allocate and dedicate the same amount of time, energy, and resources to the strategy of the foundation of your podcast if you want it to be that growth engine machine that it can be for your business.

Number three [00:04:00] is a very simple question, but we get asked this question repeatedly time after time. And that is, how should business owners measure the success of their podcast?

The

Traci DeForge: definition of success of a podcast is not directly tied to download numbers, especially for business owners who are leveraging their podcast to grow their businesses.

Because what does growth look like for your business versus my business versus the business owner across the street’s business? Everybody’s definition of success is different. You can be successful at podcasting if what you are trying to do is get visibility, leads, and sales. You can be successful with your podcast if what you wanna do is change the conversation about your industry one voice at a time You can be successful with a podcast if you are just using it as a content development machine.

If all you wanna do is step up and record something one time and repurpose the hell out of it, that [00:05:00] can be your definition of success because it’s saving you time, resources, money, and energy. That’s successful. So how you define success of a podcast, you have to go into your podcast strategy, defining that first, so that when you are evaluating those KPIs and those metrics, they align with your expectations.

Voice Over: And here we go with question number four. What is the biggest mistake that business owners make when it comes to marketing and growing their podcast?

Traci DeForge: I think the biggest growth strategy people make when thinking through the launch of their podcast is not taking into consideration the actual audience growth strategy, and relying upon perhaps just looking at organic social media, for example.

Not taking into consideration that the podcast is not a siloed piece of a marketing strategy. It has to touch all points. It needs to be integrated into the newsletter. It needs to be integrated into social, yes, but it also needs its own, [00:06:00] uh, marketing strategy. Even when people are thinking about buying ads for their business, they may think about Meta or Instagram or things like that, but they may leave out the fact that you need to actually budget also to accelerate the growth of your podcast because it is the hub of the content strategy that really
